Cousin of Emmett Till to attend Justice on Trial: Black Lives Matter Too at Boutwell Auditorium

BIRMINGHAM, AL, June 26, 2019 - The Chad Cooper Company on Broadway presents Justice on Trial: Black Lives Matter, Too - The Play coming to Boutwell Memorial Auditorium (1930 Reverend Abraham Woods, Jr. Blvd) in downtown Birmingham June 30, 2019 at 6:30 PM.

This life changing production is set in a courtroom where two civil rights attorneys are suing the U.S. Justice Department for reparations on behalf of the descendants of slaves (African Americans). It brings back time traveler expert witnesses Harriett Tubman, Medgar Evers & Emmett Till to tell their amazing stories to a mixed raced jury that deliberates the request for reparations while comparing The Then and The Now!

“This play is designed to provoke thought and public discourse about compensation for Black people as it seeks to close the racial divide,” says its creator, African American Broadway based producer Dr. Chad Lawson Cooper. “This production is educational, motivational and inspirational. We encourage all Birmingham residents to come see and experience the impactful play for themselves.”

Deborah Watts, Till’s cousin and co-founder and executive director of the Emmett Till Legacy Foundation (ETLF), will be in attendance making this a unique must-attend event. Emmett Till was only 14 years old when in 1955 he was brutally tortured and lynched for whistling at a white woman at the Bryant Grocery Store located in Money, Mississippi. When Mamie Till Mobley bravely chose to have an open casket funeral so the world could see what happened to her son, her decision, along with the acquittal of Emmett’s confessed murderers, served as catalysts for the civil rights movement.

“Told in an engaging, visceral way, as a member of the Till family I am blessed and thankful that Dr. Cooper included Emmett’s presence and story in this thought provoking work,” says Watts. ”Justice on Trial is an emotional experience for me and audiences alike, engrossing theater patrons in the world Dr. Cooper has created. And the parallels the play draws between victims of civil rights era killings and those killed at the hands of police today will resonate with attendees by the show’s conclusion.”

Watts along with many family members of Emmett Till, tthe ETLF and its ambassdors remain steadfast in their mission, to bring justice for Emmett’s murder. They continue to press Congress, the Department of Justice and law enforcement to conduct and complete an exhaustive investigation and believe local authorities involved in the case must act quickly to identify and prosecute suspects directly and indirectly involved in the kidnapping and murder, where possible, as well as those who have played a part in the crime.

During this special performance Watt’s will accept the Justice Award for her and the ETLF’s dedication to finding justice for Emmett Till and other victims of racially-motivated murders.

“This family has carried an emotional pain created by the grizzly murder of their cousin for generations,” says Dr. Cooper. “While Justice on Trial may play a small part in the healing process for them we also want to recognize the injustice they have endured for the past 64 years. It is an inspiration to see how they have remained undeterred in their belief that one day they will prevail in their fight.”

Cooper has worked alongside Tyler Perry in Madea Goes to Jail, opened for Tina Turner on the Oprah Winfrey Show, and is billed as a National Recording Artist with a hit song "I Don't Look Like What I've Been Through", that received national radio play. The Chad Cooper Company on Broadway has been touring national stage plays in over 100 cities throughout the US for the last 12 years. Birmingham is the third stop of a 25-city southern tour following successful runs on and off Broadway for the last 2 years. “Justice on Trial” sold out the historic Douglass Theatre twice this March in Macon, GA and drew a large audience to its April 7 show in Tallahassee, Florida. An August 17 showing at the WACO (Where Art Can Occur) Theatre in Hollywood, CA was added recently. The theatre was founded by actor Richard Lawson and his wife Tina Knowles Lawson - the mother of entertainment mogul BeyoncĂ©.

This play features Stage/Theater Veteran and Movie Actress (Motives II) Alicia Robinson Cooper who is also known for her amazing powerhouse voice as Lead Singer for award winning gospel great John P. Kee on “The Lily in the Valley” CD; Jerry Brunson known for his role in the movie The Preacher's Wife; as well as Birmingham based President of Total Praise Management and gospel recording artist Prince Yelder. This play will make you THINK and bring you to your feet with the musical arrangements. EUR Web says it's “A Must See!” District 9 Birmingham City Council member John Hilliard publicly expressed support of “Justice on Trial” during a mid-May council meeting that included local Civil Rights icon Gwendolyn Webb.

Excerpts of the play can be accessed on YouTube at Chad Lawson Cooper and www.thechadcoopercompany.com. Tickets can be purchased online now at www.thechadcoopercompany.com or by calling 212-786-6460

We Found Photos of Ole Miss Students Posing With Guns in Front of a Shot-Up Emmett Till Memorial. Now They Face a Possible Civil Rights Investigation.

Three students were suspended from their fraternity house, Kappa Alpha, after we shared an Instagram photo one of the men posted that was taken in front of a sign commemorating the murder of the 14-year-old black youth in 1955.

Statement from Deborah Watts, co-founder Emmett Till Legacy Foundation and cousin of Emmett Till
Seeing the images of those young men posing for photos with guns in front of a sign honoring the brutal murder of my cousin Emmett and the movement it sparked is disappointing but not surprising. Those actions represent the current climate in our nation and emanates from the highest levels of our government.

Their callous behavior and the act of vandalism does not compare to the torture that Emmett had to endure before his life was stolen. The sign can be replaced but sadly Emmett's death is eternal. His lynching has had a lasting emotional impact on our family and the nation must reckon with the violent legacy of the civil rights era as demonstrated by this picture.

While this specific incident is painful for our family, it will not distract us. It does in fact serve as a reminder of the need for us to continue our efforts in pursuit of justice for Emmett as well as other families of victims. In fact, this event further motivates me and the Emmett Till Legacy Foundation to continue Mamie Till’s (Emmett’s mother) fight to push law enforcement to hold anyone involved in his brutal murder accountable. Decades later, we continue to pursue all legal avenues, criminal and civil.

We urge the FBI or DOJ to provide our family with an update on the investigation and to take legal actions against suspects involved in Emmett's murder while they are still alive. Families of victims of civil rights era killings should be supported by the laws that governing this nation. Where there are loopholes that aid suspects and those accused of, or involved in, race related murders, we believe legislation should be enacted to close them.

Working through the Foundation we are looking to create a path towards justice and accountability for surviving relatives of victims of racially motivated killings. We will be contacting members of Congress to seek their support.

We call on activists, legal professionals and advocates across this nation to support us in our efforts for justice for Emmett Till.

We will be launching a formal campaign later this year and will issue an announcement at that time.

Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crimes Reauthorization Act Passes in the House!

December 7, 2016

Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crimes Reauthorization Act Passes in the House!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
                The lead House sponsors of the Emmett Till Bill Unsolved Civil Rights Crimes Reauthorization Act , as amended, S. 2854/ H.R. 5067 made these comments tonight when the legislation was passed in the House:

"When this bill was signed into law, family members, academics, historians, lawyers, advocates began working to develop a full accounting for these long-standing, gross human and civil rights atrocities.  The reauthorization that the House passed this evening is a response to their appeals to make the law a better tool in their quest for justice. We took the time to research and study what happened after the original bill was signed into law.  We listened to and were guided by the advocates, by law professors, by families, and by the press.  We worked across the aisle and across the Dome to develop a bill that fulfills our promise to never give up on this effort – to never abandon the pursuit of truth.  I am very pleased by House passage tonight and look forward to passage in the Senate and the signature of President Barack Obama."ORIGINAL CO-SPONSOR - Rep. John Lewis (D-GA)

            “We must never forget our nation’s dark past and should be mindful of our history and why so many in the African-American community raise the issue of whether black lives matter.  Many civil rights era crimes were barely noted or investigated, and I believe the perpetrators of those crimes should be brought to justice, even 50 years later. We passed the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crimes Act in 2007 to help bring these cases to light and seek justice for victims and their families. The Till Reauthorization Act will further empower the Department of Justice and cold case advocates to share information and review the status and closure of cases through 1980.  I applaud House passage of this legislation and urge my Senate colleagues to quickly pass the legislation, so that it can be signed into law.”  ORIGINAL CO-SPONSOR - Rep. John Conyers (D-MI)

            “As an original cosponsor of the Emmett Till Reauthorization Act, I’m pleased to see my colleagues came together and supported this important bill. This bipartisan legislation will provide for a sustained, well-coordinated effort to investigate and prosecute unsolved civil rights-era crimes. There are hundreds of cold cases from the civil rights era that have never been solved, and it is my hope that we are able to bring justice to the victims’ families.”  ORIGINAL CO-SPONSOR -  Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI)

       Senate action on the amended bill is anticipated before the end of the 114th Congress, and sponsors are hoping it will be signed into law in 2016.

The Till Bill's primary purpose is to provide federal resources to local jurisdictions in the resolution of civil rights era cold cases.  This reauthorization represents a recommitment to the original goals of the bill as well as the strengthening and clarification of the law, as called for by interested civil rights groups and families.

  • This bill requires the Department of Justice and FBI to consult with civil rights organizations, universities, and other entities that have also been gathering evidence in these cold cases;
  • Provides clearer direction and improved coordination between federal, state, and local law enforcement and the activists, advocates, and academics working on these issues;
  • Strengthens the Department of Justice’s reporting requirements;
  • Expands the time span of cases to be considered by ten years, to include all cases that occurred not later than December 31, 1979;
  • Encourages the Department of Justice to review specific closed cases that warrant further investigation;
  • Maintains the previous investigation structure and funding levels; and
  • Clarifies the law’s intent.
